Task Force Saber

June 2005-June 2006
Ramadi, Iraq

Task Force Saber originally consisted of C Company and HHC Company of the 1st Battalion, 172nd Armor , based in Morrisville and  St Albans, Vermont, respectfully.   A Company, based in Newport, Vermont was not mobilized as a unit, but it's members were called up as individuals and  filled vacancies in the other companies.

These elements of 1st BN were joined by A Company, 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry (Mountain) based in Jericho, Vermont. Task Force Saber shipped out to Camp Shelby, Mississippi for six months of  training, where they were attached to the Pennsylvania National Guard's 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 28th Infantry Division.

In May the 2/28 BCT shipped out to the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California.

From June of 2005 until June of 2006, Task Force Saber and the 2/28 BCT were deployed to the Al Anbar Province of Iraq, and served under the US Marine Corps' Second Marine Division.

During the course of the deployment, Task Force Saber was augmented by Pennsylvania's B Co, 109th Infantry and B Troop, 104th Cavalry, Kentucky's Delta Co, 149th Infantry, a platoon from the 876th Engineer Battalion, Rhode Island National Guard,  two companies from the Iraqi Army and three patrol boats from a US Marine Dam Service Unit,  bringing the total to over 900 troops.

Task Force Saber was responsible for Combat Operations, Counter – Insurgency Operations and training  the Iraqi Army and Police. We were
relieved in June of 2006 by the 1st BCT of the 1St Armor Division, and demoblized at Camp Shelby, Mississippi.
